Clifton Karhu (b. 1927)
Born in Duluth, Minnesota, Clifton Karhu graduated from the Minneapolis
School of Art in 1952. He has lived in Japan since 1955. He was active as
a painter in oil, watercolor and sumi before taking up woodblock prints in
the early 1960s. A member of the Nihon Hanga Kyokai since 1964, Karhu has
had many solo shows throughout Japan. His prints often depict typical Japanese
buildings, temples, rooftops and shops using bold lines, patterns and strong
colors.
Clifton Karhu works have been commissioned by major firms
in Japan and Hong Kong and are represented in collections, including Cincinnati;
Harvard University;
St. Paul, Minnesota and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
