John James Audubon (1785-1851)

John James Audubon was born in Haiti, the son of a French naval captain and a servant girl, he was taken to France by his father as a youngster. Later, sent by his father to manage family property near Philadelphia, Audubon married and only attained fame as an artist after many troubled years of struggle. His genius was recognized after he visited England and subscribers made possible the publication of "The Birds of America" (1827-1838). The quarto version of this series was published from 1840-1870 and offers collectors the opportunity to acquire works by Audubon at reasonable prices. The recently concluded national tour of ninety of his original watercolors has increased the popularity and demand for his works.
