Born in Tokyo
on May 18th, 1883 given name was "Bunjiro". Kawase Hasui was the eldest son
of a merchant family he studied at the Kiyokata Academy of Art. He was inspired
by Ito Shinsui's
"Eight Views of Lake Biwa" he is known as one of the most prolific and best
lanscape artists of Snow.
A Western-style
painter who studied with Kiyokata Kaburagi, Hasui turned to printmaking in
1919 with the encouragement of the influential publisher Watanabe. He became
one of the most prolific and best known artists of the New Print movement
among Western collectors. Specializing in landscapes and known for visiting
every place of scenic interest in Japan, he was named a Living National Treasure
in 1956.
