Reika Iwami (b. 1927)Born in Tokyo in 1927, Iwami Reika graduated from the Bunka Gakuin Liberal Arts College in 1955. From 1954-1966 she was a member of the Kokugakai Art Association and won the Kokuga Prize in 1959. Since the 50's, Iwami's works have been widely exhibited at the the JPA and CWAJ shows in Tokyo; Dusseldorf (1977); London (1984); San Diego (1993); Cairo (1994), and her works are in the collections of the New York MOMA; Cincinnati Art Museum; Library of Congress; Rockefeller Foundation; University of California; University of Oregon and Yale University. Iwami Reika studied with three of the most important Japanese printmakers in Japan: Koshiro Onchi, Junichiro Sekino and Takumi Shinagawa. Her subject is the world of nature, focused on water and its flow, using the grain and texture of wood to convey visual patterns of water - flowing streams, eddies, waves. She uses gold and silver leaf and occasionally adds a glittering touch of mica. The integration of rich printing, embossing, wood grain and metallic leaf create the powerful images that are her trademark. |
