Thomas Allom (1804-1872)
Thomas Allom was articled
to Goodwin, the architect, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He was
a founder member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was involved
with Sir Charles Barry in the designs for the House of Parliament. However,
he is chiefly known for his numerous topographical works, which were used
to illustrate books on travel. He traveled extensively through Europe, Turkey,
and the Near and Far East. Whilst most standard reference works state that
Allom visited the Far East, none appear to offer any precise details as to
when and where he went. Certainly subjects depicted have been taken from on-the-spot
sketches by amateur artists. He adapted some compositions by William
Alexander and Auguste Borget, but this still leaves a considerable quantity of subjects
which appear to be his own.
